Once I reached the last step at the top of the staircase, I stopped and turned. As soon as I saw the beast I leapt from the steps with my bayonet facing downward. My attack connected with flesh, but I was knocked to the side. As I looked up I saw that I had struck it in the shoulder. The gorilla grabbed a hold of the weapon by the butt and yanked it free, and then threw it aside. It howled in pain, and then turned its sights on me again. At that moment, I came up with a brilliant idea. I was crazy enough to try it.
“Come here you dumb son of a bitch!” I taunted. “You have to work for your food dick head!”
The beast came barreling towards me and I tried to dodge its attacks, but its enormous arm swept me clear across the way. As I hit the wall, it felt as if someone had sucked the air out me with a vacuum. I didn’t count on getting hit. Sluggishly, I picked myself up and drew my XD from its holster.
The monster snarled and then let out a terrifying roar. Raising my weapon I waited for the beast to come closer. Pounding its fists on the floor, the beast charged towards me. As the creature got closer, I began firing rapidly. The monster stopped dead in its tracks, and I took aim at its head. As the round left the chamber and found its way to its target, the beast let out a howl of pain.
I reached for my chest rig and pulled the grenade out of its pouch. The pin came out and I held on to the spoon of the grenade. At a dead sprint I ran at the beast, released my grip on the spoon and shoved the grenade into its mouth, and then leapt for cover. A deafening explosion erupted, shaking my entire body. As I looked up, I saw the headless corpse of the behemoth on the floor. Finally!
“FUCK YOU!” I yelled, as I kicked the corpse repeatedly. My right arm and shoulder was throbbing, and each step that I took sent jots of pain racing throughout my body. I retrieved my rifle, and attached the ax to a makeshift holder I made using some para-cord.
As I approached the grand archway, I pushed the heavy door open, and what awaited me on the other side, was what I saw on the floor above me, death. Welcoming the chaos, I walked over bodies, and pushed through make-shift barricades. Asimov was in the communal quarters, and I had to find out where that was exactly. On one of the walls was an intercom system, and I rushed over to it.
“Dr. Asimov! This is Captain Valentine.”
“I told you not to come.”
“Quit bullshitting around Doc! Listen, you’ve worked in the sealed sectors, so I’m going to assume that you know a way out of here other than the front entrance, correct?”
“What does it matter? We’re going to die here.”
“Ok, let’s get something straight. I didn’t have to risk my life fighting a legion of these things, I also didn’t have to choose to save you, or the other survivors trapped in this sector! I also didn’t have to fight an infected gorilla, and get thrown around like a rag doll!”
“I apologize that you had to go through all that trouble…” I didn’t let him finish.
“Damn right! You should be sorry! There are other survivors here that I’m pretty sure that don’t want to die. It’s a shame that you do.”
“You have no idea what my sins are. Meet me at the west wing communal quarters. It’s just passed the cafeteria. I’ll know when you’ve arrived.”
With that, the transmission went dead. I took a breather and collected my thoughts. When I was still in the service, I never left a man behind, and I sure as hell never gave up. I’m a god damned warrior! That was all the motivation I needed. Picking myself up, I looked at my wrist watch. It was synchronized with the security system’s time. Time was of the essence, and I had less than an hour to find a way out before the entire facility was sealed off.
Pushing through the sector, I cut down anything that came my way. Exhaustion began to overcome my body, and frustration began to argue with my morality. Continuing my trek to Asimov, I encountered more labyrinthine styled goose hunts, more exotic animals turned comic-book monsters, and not to mention more undead assholes who wanted to eat me for some fucking reason.
