Zombie Story

“Fire on the move!” Valentine shouted. I followed his instructions, and the others followed suit. The more we unloaded our ammo, the more these monsters came at us.
“Which way do we go sir!?” It was one of Valentine’s men, but before I could give him an answer, a horde of carriers swarmed from our right flank, taking him into their fold. It gave us enough time to take the left path. I wasn’t too sure where I was leading us, and I began to think it was all futile to even think that we could survive this death trap. Left turns became dead ends; straight ways became forks, and so forth and so on. All the while, our ammo was being wasted. I was beginning to lose hope.
“Sir, where the fuck are you taking us?” I didn’t bother to turn my head, and I didn’t need to because as fast as that man was able to curse at me, the carrier was faster. I heard his dying screams while I continued to move forward. I couldn’t stop in here; to stop meant to be taken, and I wasn’t about to let those things turn me. I’d kill myself before that ever happened.
It was by pure chance that I was able to find the staging area. As I neared the entrance, I remembered that there was a gate that cut this room off from the other side.
“Hurry! We’re almost there!” I began. “We can cut them off by shutting the gate! I need you to hold them for as long as you can!”
With that I hurried over to the control panel near the gate’s entrance. I couldn’t remember the access codes because of all the commotion going on all around me. Gun fire erupted, and I couldn’t hear myself think, just the loud bang of their weapons. Working faster and furiously, I was able to unlock the manual override of the gate. The gate’s light began to flash green, and a loud buzz echoed around the chamber.
“We’re set, the gate is about to close!”
First to come through was Captain Valentine, while Masterson provided cover. The gate began to shut, and I looked over to Masterson, who was clearly not going to make it by the time the gate shut. There was no way I was going to let him slow me down. I took aim, and sent a hammered pair down range; two rounds to the chest, and one to the head.
The gate shut completely, and I let out a sigh of relief. There wasn’t enough time to catch my breath. I looked up to see the fury in Valentine’s eyes. I watched in slow motion as his fist connected with my face. I was knocked to the floor.
“Alright, you need to start talking. I lost an entire squad of my men saving your ass. What was so important that I had to sacrifice the lives of my men for? And you killed Masterson, when he had a chance to make it out.”
I rubbed my jaw, and picked myself up. “Captain, this isn’t the time for that. On the other side of that gate is a swarm of infected biohazards that will stop at nothing to get to us.

That won’t hold for long. I understand that you’re angry—“
“Angry? I used to get angry when I ran out of shit paper. I used to get angry when people cut me off on the freeway. Oh, I’m not angry. I’m beyond that, and I’m about to beat the truth out of you, if you don’t start answering me.”
“I’ll answer your questions, but first we need to get out of here. I doubt you’d want to die before I tell you what’s going on, right? Do you have any explosives?”
“I’m about to shove a grenade down your throat, sir.” I could hear the sarcasm in his voice. I smiled coyly, and shrugged. “I do. I have one last stick of C4, and a frag.”
“Excellent. We’re going to need to use that C4 to get through that door.” I pointed at the sealed door behind him. The beauty about using C4 is that you can press the plastic into cracks, allowing the explosion to be contained and focused on one area.

All we had to do was press the stick in between the cracks in the center of the door, insert the detonator and flip the switch. The explosion would break the locks, allowing us to open the door manually.
Valentine went to work on the door while I watched the gate. The carriers were on the other side, and the sound of them pounding away at the gate got louder, and harder. Although the gate was shut, it wouldn’t hold for much longer, I just wished that it would have held on for a few more minutes. The gate began to dent, and I saw a scarred and rotting hand emerge.
