My Rant on the Evolution of Breasts in Gundam
(and the Real World)

Through watching the various Gundam TV series in the order that they were produced, I, along with some others, have noticed an interesting trend in the size of breasts.  While the trend is not perfect, there definitely appears to be an increase in size over time, which is noticeable especially if a female from the original Mobile Suit Gundam, the oldest series, is compared to a female from Mobile Suit Gundam 00, the newest series.  An example you can easily use from this article would be comparing the picture of Icelina Eschonbach, perhaps the largest breasted woman in Mobile Suit Gundam, to the picture of Louise Halvey from Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

Keep in mind that most of the female characters from Mobile Suit Gundam 00 have breasts as large as Louises.  The pictures posted may not be the best example; however, if you have watched these various Gundam series, you have probably noticed what the females look like and what kind of proportions they have.  Gundam series that seem to particularly stand out in female breast size are After War Gundam X and obviously Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

This trend brings to mind a simple question:  Why?  What need is there to increase breast size?  This does not just apply to anime; it also applies to the real world.  More and more women are getting breast augmentations, and while a certain size is attractive, I personally much prefer natural to fake.  Many women claim that they get augmentation because it makes them feel better about themselves, although I have a feeling that it is not one of the larger reasons.  The problem with women getting breast augments for self-esteem reasons is twofold.  First, most women are perfectly fine with what they naturally have.  They are just messing up their bodies in multiple ways by augmenting their breasts.  You may feel bad about your body because of what you see in the media, but most people shown in the media arent typical.  People on television are most often exaggerated, and that includes their breast size.  Also, women you may see that have large breasts that make you feel bad about yours could just have fake breasts, which is the second problem.  The more women that get breast augmentations, the more other women will feel that they are inadequate.  When they see more and more women who have larger breasts, they will feel bad about themselves, thus getting breast augmentations themselves and increasing the number of women with larger breasts, continuing the cycle.  If the cycle is allowed to continue, eventually breast size will increase to the point where we get a bunch of women who look like this:

This cannot be healthy…

Anime is simply another form of media.  While it’s easier not to compare real life to something that’s animated, the change over time in Gundam definitely correlates to the change over time in real life.  I know most people think of this kind of thing as fanservice, but is it possible that fanservice can go too far, especially when it slowly sneaks up on you, not making it very obvious what’s going on unless you compare the very old to the very new?

I have the feeling most people here would answer no =(
