Review: Tomoyo After Original Soundtrack

Review Time:

Tomoyo After Original Soundtrack
cover
Here we have the original soundtrack to the Tomoyo arc of the infamous Clannad series. With styles ranging from lush orchestration to grungy industrial, this album captivated me and, at times, forced me to press the “skip track” button. But when all is said and done, what we’re left with is a very well produced, emotional filled soundtrack. At 21 tracks in size, it would be a bit much to review each song individually. Basically we’re looking at 3 awesome tracks, 11 good tracks, and 7 “meh” tracks.
The 3 tracks that stood out the most to me were 13, 14, and 15.

13 – Memories
Opens with a thoughtful musicbox/orgel interlude, and slowly morphs into a simple but beautiful melody between clarinet, musicbox, and strings. I loved it because of its simple inherit beauty. It’s sort of like a nostalgic reflection of one childhood. (It’s funny because I typed that before I realized the name of the track was “memories”)

14 – Love Song
Best song of the album in my opinion; A beautiful, emotional, reflective piano piece. I absolutely love that “airy reverb” tonal quality of the piano. Technically-speaking, the piano was split into multiple tracks and sent through different reverbs or “spaces” that, in turn, create a great feeling and atmosphere to accompany the gorgeous melodies.

15 – Harmony with Sorrow
I’m not exactly sure why I loved this one. It’s just a simple, well-done, and captivating piece of music, perfect for accompanying an emotional anime like Clannad. The spacing and atmosphere of the mix is perfect. Everything sounds in its place and well executed. A lush air pad carried along by simple percussion lays the foundation as various instruments weave a fabric of sound around it…

In the end, the Tomoyo After Original Soundtrack is a perfect blend of emotional and captivating music. I was a bit disappointed in a few of the tracks that didn’t fit in with the rest of the album, but once you skip past those (or delete them) the album is simply wonderful! Highly recommended!

(psst, you can find a flac rip of it on Box…)

BxT Idol!

BxT Idol!
Well, as we all know, BxT Idol! is really getting into the swing. With ~40 applicants already and more joining every day, we could easily consider this a success.

BxT Idol is a singing competition which vaguely follows the confines of TV shows such as, “X-Factor” and “Pop Idol”. (In fact, all we have in common is singing and judges.)

The competition is still in the early stages, (Applications), but that isn’t stopping people from going all out already.

We have a full list of all the applicants here: Click Me!

So early into the competition, we have no idea what to expect, but I have a few ideas on who I would like to win. Can’t tell you though, it might affect the scores! =P

My Rant on the Evolution of Breasts in Gundam (and the Real World)

Mystery Blogger
Every once in a while we’ll invite a guest to post a blog.
Random thought, rants, ideas, etc…
All ready to be shared with the public!

This week’s mystery blog:
My Rant on the Evolution of Breasts in Gundam
(and the Real World)

Through watching the various Gundam TV series in the order that they were produced, I, along with some others, have noticed an interesting trend in the size of breasts.  While the trend is not perfect, there definitely appears to be an increase in size over time, which is noticeable especially if a female from the original Mobile Suit Gundam, the oldest series, is compared to a female from Mobile Suit Gundam 00, the newest series.  An example you can easily use from this article would be comparing the picture of Icelina Eschonbach, perhaps the largest breasted woman in Mobile Suit Gundam, to the picture of Louise Halvey from Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

Keep in mind that most of the female characters from Mobile Suit Gundam 00 have breasts as large as Louises.  The pictures posted may not be the best example; however, if you have watched these various Gundam series, you have probably noticed what the females look like and what kind of proportions they have.  Gundam series that seem to particularly stand out in female breast size are After War Gundam X and obviously Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

This trend brings to mind a simple question:  Why?  What need is there to increase breast size?  This does not just apply to anime; it also applies to the real world.  More and more women are getting breast augmentations, and while a certain size is attractive, I personally much prefer natural to fake.  Many women claim that they get augmentation because it makes them feel better about themselves, although I have a feeling that it is not one of the larger reasons.  The problem with women getting breast augments for self-esteem reasons is twofold.  First, most women are perfectly fine with what they naturally have.  They are just messing up their bodies in multiple ways by augmenting their breasts.  You may feel bad about your body because of what you see in the media, but most people shown in the media arent typical.  People on television are most often exaggerated, and that includes their breast size.  Also, women you may see that have large breasts that make you feel bad about yours could just have fake breasts, which is the second problem.  The more women that get breast augmentations, the more other women will feel that they are inadequate.  When they see more and more women who have larger breasts, they will feel bad about themselves, thus getting breast augmentations themselves and increasing the number of women with larger breasts, continuing the cycle.  If the cycle is allowed to continue, eventually breast size will increase to the point where we get a bunch of women who look like this:

This cannot be healthy…

Anime is simply another form of media.  While it’s easier not to compare real life to something that’s animated, the change over time in Gundam definitely correlates to the change over time in real life.  I know most people think of this kind of thing as fanservice, but is it possible that fanservice can go too far, especially when it slowly sneaks up on you, not making it very obvious what’s going on unless you compare the very old to the very new?

I have the feeling most people here would answer no =(

So… fine! Everyone’s entitled to his/her own opinion!
Just because you don’t like this wonderful anime doesn’t mean you’re stupid. In fact, it means you’re much smarter than I am, because I’m too narrow-minded to accept that everyone has different opinions.

Staff Leak!

Secret-y News-y stuff!

-Chiya looks around to make sure Jarudin isn’t hiding behind a bush aiming a gun at him-
Alright, looks like the coast is clear! Let’s see how much secret comedy and news I can pass on before I’m caught and hauled away. =D

Let me tell you about offered torrents! Once this happens, moderators and administrators flock to the scene, like buffalo to the waterhole during a drought. After looking around, decisions have to be made. “Is the torrent already on the site?” “Is the series licensed?” “Is the torrent complete?” “Is the torrent made of fail? If so, is it fixable?”

At this point, super secret discussions are made. We meet up in a secret underground bunker and report our various findings and opinions. It’s generally at this point an action is made. One of us might Reject the torrent, with or without an explanation. We may request the uploader to do our evil bidding to make the torrent more acceptable, or we might give the “Semi-Approved” sign.

Once a torrent has been Semi-Approved, another mod will come sniffing, and double check to see if all is within reason. If it’s not, then quick queries and discussions in dark alleyways and isolated corners take place until the problems are resolved.

After all this time, the second staff member presses the big green flashing button saying “GRANT” and the torrent pops to the top of the RSS feed where the hungry Power Users are waiting for their slice of new torrent.

Uh oh! -Chiya spots Jarudin running towards him-
I think it’s time to make myself scarce. If I don’t make it out alive, tell kureshii that I love him!

Kanji Time

Let’s Learn Japanese!

Whip out those ink stones and ink brushes…
It’s time for the official BxT Blog kanji lesson!
Lent your inkstone to the neighbor? Any writing utensil will do.

For those of you who may or may not know, kanji is one of the 3 written Japanese alphabets. (The other two being Hiragana and Katakana) Kanji is a very mysterious and beautiful beast. Each pictogram represents an idea or word, and changes meaning when combined with other ideas or words. Sound complicated? It is. But with a bit of practice and a little luck, you too can start taming the beast and firm your grasp over the Japanese language!

Let’s begin:
The three kanji we are learning this blog are Sky, Time, and Spring.

Sky

sky

sky

Meanings: sky, air, empty
On-reading: kuu
Kun-reading: sora, a(ku), kara

Time

time

time

Meanings: time, duration, period, hour
On-reading: ji
Kun-reading: toki, ~doki

Spring

spring

spring

Meanings: spring, spring of life, youth
On-reading: shun
Kun-reading: haru

You may be asking: What’s with this On-reading/Kun-reading business? In a nutshell, it’s how the kanji is pronounced, depending on its usage. “On” readings are typically used when the kanji is combined with other kanji to form a compound. “Kun” readings are typically used when the kanji is used on its own. We’ll delve more into this topic in later lessons.

Hope you enjoyed this brief introduction into the massive world of kanji!
