Win is win

From the logs of #box-support (edited for privacy, brevity and to remove posts from annoying side characters). We don’t usually post stories from the IRC support channel, but this was just too funny to pass up.

Spelling and grammar have not been edited, but before you start harping on the low standards of language used, remember that this exchange occurred on IRC and nobody cares much about that stuff.

Moderating as therapy

A quick post while on a coffee break; I don’t know if anyone else feels (or is crazy enough to feel) the same way, but I do find moderating quite therapeutic.

On a good day you see good offers waiting to be granted (though some, for various reasons, might not be granted immediately), torrent reports coming in for torrents that need fixing, comment reports and all sorts of reports waiting to be resolved. When the system runs smoothly, the reports that come in are sensible and well-written, and you get a real sense of progress fixing stuff up, improving descriptions, making changes to the Wiki (yeah, it is constantly being changed even if nobody notices T_T) and taking care of adoptions. Yeah, it’s easy to get high on moderating.

Then there are days when users just refuse to make your job easier, insist on asking questions that have been asked countless times (and hence have been answered in the FAQ), or generally just make things difficult, whether intentionally or unintentionally (sample question asked in help form: “how do i put up a display picture?”. It’s a legitimate question, but also one that could easily have been self-resolved if one could be bothered to explore the settings page).

On those days, you erase your memory and start afresh the next day 🙂

IE7 Fail -_-

Someone reported (thanks!) that a download link for a torrent was not working properly (torrent: link).

I already suspected at first that there might be a strange character in there, but all characters work fine on Windows and are accepted as valid (including the semicolon). After a bit of checking it turns out the problematic browser is IE7. It cuts the filename at the semicolon. After checking the code again I understand why it could possibly, remotely, happen granted that the developers for IE7 are a bunch of tards and are keen on ignoring common sense and anything that requires brain cells.

Weekends Are Too Short

It’s a never-ending cycle really. Every Monday, you look forward to Friday and every Friday, you hope Monday is far away. But before you know it, it’s Monday again and you need to get up early for work.
There is also another cycle related to work, as mentioned by a friend of mine yesterday. To paraphrase:
“You go to work to make money. You need money to help achieve happiness. You need happiness because you work.”

Wiedźmin

As some of you may know Wiedźmin (Eng: the Witcher) is a game, series and sequential novel by Polish author Andrzej  Sapkowski.

The PC game came out in 2007. While I was playing it it felt like there was much more to the story than explained in the game so I Googled for a bit and found out about the novels and a Polish series called Wiedźmin. I watched the series for a bit but it was a little disappointing, the story didn’t explain much and I was getting really interested in the novels.

Last year I bought the English translation of the first novel: the Last Wish and I liked it a lot. I recently found out the second book has also been translated into English: Blood of Elves, and it’s now lying on my desk ready to be read 🙂

What I like so much about the story is that not everything is what it seems to be at first and quite often good and bad are not so easy to separate.

If you like fantasy with a serious story (like Lord of the Rings, but less epic) I can really recommend the Witcher. I liked it a lot.

Question of the Week

A little early into the week to be picking a winner, but I sure hope we don’t actually get a new winner by the end of this week >_>

how can i upload a torrent on this tracker?????

Sigh… I dunno. Is a site without the text UPLOAD in honking <h1> tags linked to the upload page too difficult to navigate? Is it really too much effort to browse around and figure out how things work here, or to just read the FAQ?

[edit] We might have a runner-up candidate for question of the week.

Caught by the server: upload.php: ” | ‘Naruto English Dubbed 1-209.torrent’ Couldn’t create a temporary file, most likely your file is too big. Try increasing the piece size.

At least he/she knows how to make an offer 🙂

Trying

I generally try to be a nice guy, in real life or when moderating. Everyone’s been in a newbie’s shoes before, and I’m one of those who believe that what goes around comes around.

But once in awhile, a particular question appears in modhelp. The kind of question you look at and wish you hadn’t seen. The kind of question you wish someone else would answer so you don’t have to. And looking through my collection of images I found one of those questions.

howdoidownlodeanimes

I can’t remember what our reply to him was, and I can’t remember who handled that question either, but I sure am glad that it is now covered in the miraculous FAQ 😀
